Every we week we enjoy getting to highlight one of our very talented doodlers! Today we are sharing more about Emily Patriquin aka @emilydabbles.
Please can you give us a brief little introduction about yourself?
Hello! My name is Emily and I live in the PNW in Vancouver, WA which is just north of Portland. I’m a wife and a mother to three small boys. I do a little social media marketing on the side, but mostly I stay home with my boys- and they keep me busy!
What inspires you?
I am inspired by my kids’ wild imaginations. Kids are the best at being uninhibited in their creativity. Often I’m so invested in an idea they told me about, that I just want to create
What is your favourite thing to draw?
Animals. I love drawing animals and nature.
What art goals do you have for this year?
This next year my goal is to get an agent and/or write and illustrate my own children’s book. I’ve been submitting my work for the better part of this year and I have a huge stack of “no’s”. But it only takes one yes- so I keep pressing onward and challenge myself to be better than I was before!
What techniques/supplies do you use?
About 4 years ago I started working digitally in Procreate and haven’t looked back. Having an undo button is a game changer! I do love the texture and tactility of gouache and watercolors and try to find chances to play with those. Unfortunately, my two year old is fond of “helping” with my paintings, so making tactile art isn’t entirely practical for me at the moment…
What advice would you give to another doodler/artist?
I have been drawing daily for almost five years. Drawing isn’t this magical gift presented at birth- it’s a skill that you have to practice and work at. Do I create gorgeous art every single day? No! But do I get to improve my skill and spark that creativity burning inside me each day by having a daily practice? Absolutely I do!
Basically I’m saying if you want to draw, do it, and don’t stop!
